The incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed outside a nearby shop. According to the police, the assailants fired 12 rounds at the victim, identified as Ravinder. He was shot in the chest, head and abdomen.

Preliminary investigations have led the police to believe that the crime was committed by a local, who has a criminal record, and his associates. Ravinder lived with his family in Kakrola Village of Outer Delhi and worked in Uttam Nagar, said the police. “The incident occurred on Wednesday night, when the victim was returning home after meeting his friend.

He was travelling in his Hyundai i10 car when a Maruti Swift overtook his vehicle and signaled him to stop. As he stopped his car near Old Palam Road, three men got out of the Swift and opened fire at Ravinder. The firing continued for at least 30 seconds,” said a police officer. The three men, who had covered their faces, escaped from the spot, shows the CCTV footage. The incident came to light when a passer-by called the police. The victim was taken to nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

The assailants had tried to extort the victim, who was reportedly planning to contest councillor elections, but he refused to give them any money, said the police. “While investigating the case, police came to know that the victim had received several extortion calls from the associate of a local criminal,” said the officer. “The victim’s family members claimed that he was receiving several extortion calls. Initially, the callers were demanding Rs 50 lakh, but they later asked him to give Rs 10 lakh.
