At least 27 people, mostly women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede on the banks of the River Godavari in Andhra Pradesh on the first day of a major religious festival.

The stampede occurred after political leaders left the venue and a hoard of people entered the venue. The venue was closed until the political leaders took a dip in the water and exited.

Devotees quickly tried to enter the venue and didn’t care whether they stepped on any child or elderly person on the ground.
