(DSU News Bureau) It turns out there was never a consideration by UNESCO on Sri Harmandir Sahib being a heritage site after all. After contacting UNESCO, the Sikh Council UK revealed UNESCO never received nomination of Sri Harmandir Sahib by the Indian Government.

A Belgian student created a stir among the Sikh community worldwide after starting a petition asking UNESCO to withdraw consideration of Sri Harmandir Sahib.

UNESCO representative Kishore Rao responded to Sikh Council UK inquiry into whether UNESCO has received any application on Sri Harmandir Sahib being considered a heritage site.

In the letter, the British Sikh Council UK wrote to UNESCO, they specifically asked whether any consideration was taking place and whether any application was received.

Kishore Rao of UNESCO responded by stating “There is no consideration and no application.”

However, the letter written by Kishore Rao does mention that an application was submitted in 2004 and “is included in the tentative list since 2004.”
