South Hall Gurdwara Committee Member Attempts to Defame Sikhs in National Newspaper

The Independent Newspaper of the United Kingdom called a group of Sikhs who stopped an Outer faith wedding ‘Thugs’.

The incident occurred at the Havelock Gurdwara Sahib last friday when concerned Sikhs prevented a sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib Ji by stopping an Anand Karaj between a Polish man and woman born to Sikh parents.

The group of Sikhs peacefully protested without creating any drama and peacefully forced the Gurdwara committee to stop the Anand Karaj. The Sikhs also spoke with the groom and convinced him to instead settle for a court marriage instead of religious ceremony.

The term ‘thugs’ which was quoted first by a Gurdwara committee member Sohan Singh Sumra is completely misleading and puts Sikhs in Bad light. How can you call those who are upholding the sanctity of the Anand Karaj ceremony ‘thugs’? The Havelock Gurdwara committee appears to be ignorant about Sikh religion and it’s ceremonies.

The Sikh Council UK recently released guidelines for interfaith marriages which the committee totally didn’t adhere to. The Akal Takht has issued various Hukamnama which strictly state that an Anand Karaj ceremony can only be between 2 Sikhs. The Sikh Rehat Maryada which was constructed from historical rehitnamas from the 1700s also states that an Anand Karaj could only happen between 2 Sikhs.

Sohan Singh Sumra has attempted to defame the national image of Sikhs in the UK and made a joke of Sikh Anand Karaj.

Furthermore, the comments made by the Vice-president of Gurdwara were baseless with no credibility. Learn what really happened: Singh Speaks out on Havelock Gurdwara Incident

The independent quoted him saying:

Sohan Singh Sumra, vice-president of the temple, told The Independent a group of up to 22 people arrived shortly after 8am.

“They were all thugs,” he added. “None of them were recognised by any of the Sikh groups here.

“It was because it was a mixed marriage…they just came here to spoil it and intimidate us.”

The committee is responsible for the defamation of the Sikh religion after the article published by the Independent.
