Our first month is Chayt, not January. According to Gurbani our Sikh New Year starts in March on Sangrand. One need not look far to understand the logical reasoning behind this.
1. We have 4 seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn (Fall) and Winter. The first season is Spring which starts in the month of March.
2. In Spring, roots are revived and nourished back to health. Trees start to grow their leaves back and everything becomes green and beautiful again. Thus, nature itself signifies when the New Year is beginning.
3. In Spring, the snow begins to melt and and through falls and rivers, starts making its way to reach its destiny in the Ocean.
4. The astrological signs cycle also starts in March with the sign of Aries.
People now you decide for yourselves when the actual New Year begins: in the depths of Winter in January, or the blossoming of new life in Spring in March on Sangrand.
In accordance with the Desi calendar, the first month of the year is called “Chaeth.” In relation to the English calendar, this month is March. The current Christian calendar year is 2016. However, our calendar year begins 57 years prior to that, thus making this year 2073.
Nanaksahi Samat 548 and Khasla Samat 318.
