Sukhwinder Singh who died while saving a woman from an armed robbery was honored by the Mayor and police commander along with 20 people at Gurdwara Singh Sabha London East.
The 31 year old Sikh was stabbed to death in January 2010 near Barking station and awarded posthumously for his act of bravery.
Sukhwinder Singh was honoured with a plaque on a newly made bench at memorial service held inside the Gurdwara where he prayed everyday Sunday.
Inder Singh Jamu, 79, service co-ordinator for gurdwara, which organised the unveiling, said: “We appreciate the goodwill of Barking and Dagenham council. The plaque is a fitting tribute for his brave action and validates the borough’s slogan of ‘one borough one community’
“It was a beautiful day and the community is happy with the nice gesture. The bench will be used well.”
