Sikh Gas Station Clerk Shot Dead in California

The South Lake Tahoe gas station clerk fatally shot Tuesday night has been identified as 27-year-old Manpreet Ghuman Singh.

Singh died after suffering a single bullet wound to his upper torso, according to a South Lake Tahoe Police Department news release. Police said robbery does not appear to have been involved.

Although a suspect has not been identified, police said it appears the crime was committed by a lone individual.

A patron walked into the USA gas station at 2470 Lake Tahoe Blvd. about 10:50 p.m. and found Singh lying on the floor with blood around him. The patron called 911. Police and paramedics arrived and administered CPR, but Singh was declared dead at the scene.

Police said surveillance video showed a thin man, about 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall entering the store through the front door. The man was wearing dark clothing, including a black hoodie and a dark mask over his face.

During a brief encounter with the clerk, the man raised a handgun and shot Singh. Police said Singh fell to the floor and the gunman fled.

South Lake Tahoe detectives are working with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices as well as the FBI on the investigation. In the search for potential leads, police said information is being gathered concerning all aspects of the victim’s life, including his possible interactions with disgruntled customers or any troubled personal relationships.

The Lake Tahoe Secret Witness Program has offered a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the case. An anonymous donor also contacted Secret Witness to contribute an additional $2,500 to the reward for a total of $4,000.

Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling the 24-hour Secret Witness phone line at (530) 541-6800.
