SGPC to Make Giani Maan Singh as New Damdama Sahib Jathedar

According to media reports, SGPC has chosen Giani Maan Singh to be the new Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib in the place of Jathedar Balwant Singh Nandharh.

Currently, Giani Maan Singh is the head granthi at Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji.

The decision will be made on January 17 when the executive body of the SGPC meets at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib.

150 of the 185 SGPC members submitted a memorandum to the SGPC head Avtar Singh Makkar for the removal of current Jathedar of Damdama Sahib. The other issues in the memorandum included the change constitutions of section 25b which classifies Sikhs as hindus.

The Sant Samaj held a conference at Nanaksar recently, where they passed a resolution for the removal of Jathedar Nandgargh.

The ruling party of Punjab became unhappy after he Jathedar’s open support for the Nanakshahi calendar.

Damdami Taksal head Harnam Singh Dhumma supports the Bikrami calendar and has requested the Akal Takht Jathedar to act on it.

The Nanakshahi Calendar was adopted in 2003 but recently their was some disagreement with gurpurab dates.

However 1 SGPC member who is the spokesperson of the Panthic coordination committee stated politicians shouldn’t take calls on removals of the jathedars as it was weaken the power of Takhts and Jathedars.
Nandgarh has blamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of making the Sant Samaj support the Bikrami Calendar.
