The Comptroller and Auditor General has released a report which shows that about 40% of Punjab’s ground water is contaminated with hazardous chemicals, heavy metals, and radioactive material. The water that is impacted by contamination has been termed unsafe to drink according to the report.
The report is set to be tabled in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on February 20, 2020.
The chemicals in the water were stated as beyond the permissible limits for human consumption. Of the 40%, 10% was unsafe for irrigation purposes and remaining 30% was stated to be moderately saline/alkaline and can’t be used by humans.
The CAG reported also noted that wells in Punjab showed the highest depletion of wells in the top 10 worst affected Indian states.
The CAG also noted that Punjab’s groundwater extraction has sky rocketed in recent years showing an increase of 149% since 2013 to 165% in 2018 due to paddy sowing.
