A rare story has come to light of a Punjabi man choosing not to have an Anand Karaj because his wife isn’t ready for Sikhi. Unlike, Punjabi girls who are marrying Muslim boys in Gurdwaras in record numbers, a Punjabi man thinks otherwise. The man out of respect chose to have a civil marriage because he didn’t want to commit sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.
Reportedly, the man has worn a turban all his life and could have opted for an Anand Karaj but since his wife had little knowledge of the Sikh faith he chose to simply do an ardas to be blessed with Sikhi one day.
The incredible story reminds us to have respect for our Guru and continue to make efforts to understand more and more about Sikhi. The Anand Karaj ceremony is being taken as a joke worldwide and in the name of interfaith harmony and coexistence, sacrilege is committed daily.
An Anand Karaj is for those who have accepted Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their guru and adhere to the teachings. It’s for those who follow the Sikh Rehat Maryada which is in accordance to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and follow the Sikh code of conduct.
Today, corrupt Gurdwara committees for the sake of a few dollars allow marriages between a non Sikh and someone who assume to be Sikh. The fact the parties don’t understand is that the ceremony is more than going around in circles but it’s commitment to live by teachings of Sikh Gurus and to seek guidance of the Guru.
The example of the Singh should be followed and more Punjabis who aren’t GurSikh should abandon Anand Karaj and choose ardas and then a Civil Marriage.
