Punjab Woman Fraudulently Sold as Slave in Sauda Arabia, Family Appeals to Indian Government

A woman named Paramjit Kaur from Karosian village in Jallandhar was sold as a slave in Saudia Arabia few years back by an agent in the village. The agent had told the woman that her income would be 25,000 rupees per month but the family says they haven’t been paid anything. The woman was promised a steady income in Sauda Arabia by the agent to which the woman agreed but she didn’t know she would be sold as a slave.

The family says she left to Saudia Arabia so that the poor conditions of the home can be improved. The daughter of the woman told the press that her mother is regularly beaten and treated as a slave.

The family has appealed to the Indian Embassy but no effort appears to have been made to bring the woman back. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj had tweeted a while back that Paramjit would be returned back to India, however that tweet was deleted a day later.

The slave owner in Saudia Arabia has demanded 5 lakhs for the woman or otherwise she would be kept in the country. There have been dozens of cases where Punjabi woman have been sold illegally by agents to Saudia Arabia as slaves.
