A new petition against Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has gone viral and in a single day has already received over 700 signatures. The petition alleges that Giani Gurbachan Singh has “Failed to support the Sikh Sangat and Bhai Gurbaksh Singh by declaring the hunger strike morcha of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh as anti-gurmat after meeting Sukhbir Badal and have failed to uphold the sanctity of Ardaas that he was part of on December 4 , 2013″ reads the petition.
There are mixed feelings within the Sikh Sangat worldwide after the let down by Giani Gurbachan Singh towards the Morcha occurring at Gurudwara Amb Sahib, Mohali and ruling it anti gurmat. Many feel since the Akal Takht is the supreme authority of the Khalsa Panth that it should be independent from any political pressure. The petition further reads ” Sikhs around the globe have been watching your actions as the current Akal Takhat Jathedar with great dismay as he has consistently failed to act in accordance with upholding Sikh values, pursuit of justice for Sikhs and most importantly in standing in solidarity with the Sikh Sangat on critical issues affecting the Sikh Nation. His failure to fully support Bhai Gurbaksh Singh’s peaceful and just hunger strike which the Sikh Sangat has endorsed is a critical example of his lack of leadership and vision.”
Sikhs on social networks have expressed their disappointment with the Jathedar as they feel ” lost confidence in his ability to represent the Sikhs as Akal Takhat Jathedar and as a humble member of the Sangat, We request that he should resign from this post immediately” further reads the petition.
However despite the negative reactions towards the Akal Takht Jathedar, Sikhs respect and obey the institution of the Akal Takht established by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji as the temporal and representative authority of the Sikhs.
