Terrifying moment Qatar Airways passenger jet aborted takeoff and came to a screeching halt on the runway (and passengers watched it unfold on their in-flight screens). It was meant to celebrate an aircraft model’s first-ever journey from the US, but this Qatar Airways charter flight carrying journalists and staff didn’t go as planned.
Nerve-wracking footage shows the moment the Airbus A350-900 abandoned its takeoff attempt as it sped along a runway at New York’s JFK Airport and came to a screeching halt.
Passengers were left shaken and confused – and some wanted to get off the plane – as they tried to figure out whether the plane stopped due to an emergency
Thursday night’s chartered flight from New York to Doha, Qatar, was carrying just 36 passengers as the airline became the first to operate an A350 commercial flight from the US.
A video clip captured by aviation journalist Zach Honig, who was invited on the inaugural journey and was seated in one of 36 business class seats, shows the reactions of those on board when flight QR7452 came to a sudden halt on the runway.
Passengers watched the moment unfold as live footage from a forward-facing camera mounted on the plane’s tail was beamed onto their in-flight entertainment screens.
In a blog entry, Honig, editor-in-chief of The Points Guy, described it as a ‘terrifying’ experience and ‘the most memorable flight of my life’.
He wrote on the website: ‘About 18 seconds after we began rolling down JFK’s runway 22R, the aircraft self-aborted, bringing us from more than 100mph to a loud, screeching halt in roughly 15 seconds.
