Surinderpal Singh Cheema is now the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of the Western Naval Command. The Western Naval Command has been often said to be the Indian Navy’s sword arm.


The past experience of Surinderpal Singh entails the following positions commanded three frontline ships, including the missile boat, INS Nishank, the guided missile frigate, INS Trishul and aircraft carrier INS Viraat.

He was awarded the Nau Sena Medal when he was commanding Nishank in Sri Lanka in 1989 facing enemy during intense operations.
