Punjabi actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh became the first mainstream Punjabi singer to win a FilmFare award. He is also the first turban wearing sardar to win the award in nearly 17 years. The award was given for best debut male actor for the film ‘Udta Punjab.’

When he accepted the award, he greeted the audience with “Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh.” He went onto thank those involved in the film.

Diljit Dosanjh has been featured in many bollywood associated interviews where he has repeatedly explained the meaning behind the Sikh turban. A radio host asked Diljit about the importance of the turban to which Diljit responded by saying, “Sikhs were given the option to wear helmets but they said they rather die than to take their turban off. They weren’t given death compensation because they didn’t wear the turban so to them their faith was more important than their lives.”

He’s also stated in two recent interviews of his dream of becoming a GurSikh. He stated, “my dream is to become a GurSikh and Maharaj Kirpa it will happen.”
