In February 1762 Sikhs faced worst days of their existence. By Kamaljeet Singh
On 5th February DAL PANTH was surrounded by more than 3 Lakh Afghan-Rohilla-Mughal Forces led by Ahmed Shah Abdali (Kaabli Billa).
In a bloody battle we remember as VADDA GHALLUGHARA , more than 40,000 Sikhs, mostly women, children and elderly died at hands of invading Afghan forces. Sikh warriors did their best to protect as many lives they could. Out of total 60,000 SIKHS, 40 thousand attained Shaheediya.
What happened next?
(There were no Ros Marches, Black Flag marches, Black Diwalis, Petitions etc.)
That very year, in October 1762, DAL PANTH gathered again at Sri Amritsar to ”CELEBRATE DIWALI SARBAT KHALSA”.
Abdali was in Lahore. He was shocked! He was furious !
His only thought was – How could they rise again so quickly?
He moved again with his forces. Amritsar was just 30 Miles from Lahore.
This time he planned to finish each and every Sikh!
Singhs led by Baba Jassa Singh Ahluwalia-Baba Sukha Singh- Sardar Charat Singh and others came to know about Abdali’s attack!
Doing Ardas at Sri Darbar Sahib, SIKH WARRIORS took up positions in Sri Amritsar.
The day was Amavas. There was to be a Solar Eclipse soon.
More than 2 Lakh Afghan Army attacked 30,000 Sikhs. There was a bloody battle in Sri Amritsar. Sikhs had Sri Darbar Sahib in front of their eyes, they had Guru in their hearts and they had vengeance of 40,000 Sikhs brothers and Sisters who fell in Ghallughara on their Mind.
AKAAL PURKH did Kirpa on his Panth!
Soon, Land of Sri Amritsar was filled with Afghan-Mughal corpses. Thousands were killed in Battlefield, and thousands were taken prisoners. Abdali who had dreamed of finishing Sikhs had to RUN from Battlefield with his bodyguards. He did not stop at Lahore, crossed Ravi, Jhelum and straight to Kabul.
KHALSA WAS VICTORIOUS with Guru Kirpa.
Blue Flag waved in Battlefield! Singhs returned to Darbar Sahib victorious with Guru Kirpa.
This was same Qaum whom Abdali had nearly decimated in Vadda Ghallughara but this QAUM did not lose its FAITH in Almighty Akal Purkh.
It did not lose heart, it did not went back to accept defeat !
Khalsa celebrated the Day with Tradition!
Prisoners were not killed or tortured, but they were made to clean Darbar Sahib Sarovar which they had filled with Mud and Debris in February!
WHERE DO WE STAND TODAY ?
HISTORY IS NOT JUST TO BE READ AND SAID ON STAGES AND SUNG IN SONGS – IT IS LIGHT WHICH HAS TO BE HELD IN HAND TO LIGHT UP PATH OF FUTURE !
(Bhul chukk di Khima in Advance because some sensitive hearts may be hurt by this episode of history!)
