Ludhiana : The anti-narcotic wing of the police commissionerate in Ludhiana on Tuesday arrested a cop-turned-international kabaddi coach for carrying 5-gm heroin near the fire brigade office at Lakkar Bazaar in Ludhiana.
The accused has been identified as Sukhdev Singh alias Shukri (45) of Dheri village in Meharban area here. Singh, who was in Maruti Swift car, was caught carrying drugs during his checking.
A case under Section 22-61-85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) has been registered against the accused at police station, division number 1.
Sub-inspector Rajesh Kumar, incharge at the anti-narcotic wing-1, said the police had received a tip-off, after which the accused was arrested.
The sub-inspector added that the accused had joined the police department as a special police officer (SPO) in 1992 through sports quota. “He served the department for 11 years. In 2003, he resigned from the job and migrated to Italy, where he became the coach for the kabaddi team of Italy,” Kumar added. He said, “The accused told us that his family dispute had led him towards narcotics. He said he used to buy drugs from one Sonu.” Meanwhile, the police are also on a look out for Sonu.
Shukri runs a sports academy in his native village and had come to Ludhiana to visit his family a few days ago.
