An Indian american woman by the name of Shanthi Viswanathan put her life at risk to save children in he Algebra II class.
Gunshots overwhelmed the school and as the second fire alarm rang she immediately rounded up her students on the floor of the class into a corner and they all huddled together.
The gunman head set off the fire alarm causing students to come out of their classrooms. However, instead of letting the students out she thought to keep them quiet and huddled in a corner.
“She was quick on her feet. She used her knowledge. She saved a lot of kids,” Dawn Jarboe, the mother of one of Viswanathan’s students, told the newspaper.
SWAT teams arrived inside the school but despite that she refused to let anyone in to prevent taking any chance of her student’s lives.
The shooter killed 17 students before escaping in the chaos by dropping his gun. The shooter was captured 40 minutes later after visiting Walmart and Macdonalds.
