Hate Crime Against Sikh Man in New Jersey


A man was arrested for the intimidation and harassment of a Sikh man on February 20 at the Route 46 gas station in Parisppany, New Jersey. The man who was reported to be from Morris Plains had yelled racial slurs at a Sikh man while he was getting gas.

The District Attorney or the public prosecutor told the Morris County Superior Court that the man Steven Laverty stated, “a terrorist, a Muslim, and that he should go back to his own country.”

The man was arrested and depression pills along with other drugs were confiscated during the arrest.

The Sikh man tried to take pictures and videos while he was getting verbally abused and that’s when the man tried to flee before attempting to take his phone.

The suspect was caught shortly after the 911 call and charges of carrying illegal drugs were also pressed.

It was reported the man had a history of criminal complaints.
