Sufi singer and former vice-president of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Hans Raj Hans joined Congress on Saturday in the presence of Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh.

Hans had started his political journey by joining the SAD on November 9, 2008, in the presence of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and was announced the party’s candidate from Jalandhar Lok Sabha (reserve) seat for 2009 general elections. He was also vice-president of SAD and appointed as member of parliamentary affairs committee (PAC), supreme committee of the party.

He lost the election to Congress’s candidate Mohinder Singh Kaypee with a margin of over 36,000 votes.
Hans had resigned from SAD on December 14, 2014. He was reportedly angry from the party leadership after Pawan Kumar Tinu, CPS and Adampur MLA, was given party ticket for the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 parliamentary elections. Sources close to Hans had revealed that the singer left the SAD as he felt sidelined by the party high command.
