Gurdwara granthi burnt alive in Punjab

AMRITSAR: A Nihang Sikh allegedly burnt alive a ‘granthi’ of a gurdwara after assaulting him in Punjab’s Amritsar district.

granthiNihang Shamsher Singh Shera committed the act on Friday. Police have registered a case against him and his family who are missing.

Amritsar rural senior superintendent of police Manmohan Singh said Gurdwara Rori Sahib at Varpal village was constructed on the land of Nihang Shamsher Singh Shera but management of the gurdwara was with Baba Lakha Singh of Guru Ka Bagh.

On Friday Shera along with his family members and others arrived at the gurdwara and allegedly thrashed granthi Wariyam Singh. They then tied him to the bed and set him on fire.

Singh said Shera had terror links and was a drug addict due to which the sangat of Varpal and nearby villages had always opposed him running the gurdwara.

Shera had made a similar attempt to wrest the control of the gurdwara last year but was foiled by the locals. He said police had registered a case against him and his family members.
