Five people, including four students, were reported to have gone missing into the Sutlej river, while three others survived following a cloudburst near Chewadi on Sunni-Lhuri Road in Shimla district on Tuesday afternoon. The students were part of a tourist group from Nawanshehr in Punjab and their guide was a Nepali national, who is among those missing. One car has also been washed away by the flash flood.
Shimla SP D W Negi, who was the first to get an alert from the local police station, said that eight people were engaged in rafting activity in the Sutlej river when the water started rising due to the cloudburst, following thunderstorm and heavy rain in the area.
“All victims barring the guide, were from Punjab. The seven youths belonged to the age group of 20 to 25 and were students of some Punjab institute,” Negi added.
