In one of the most bizarre things to have happened, a naked man broke into a Gurdwara Sahib in Spokane, Washington causing $35,000 in damage. The Spokane Country Sheriff’s department stated that the naked man broke into the Gurdwara and then grabbed a hold of a ceremonial sword and went on a rampage destroying property.
Reportedly, the man grabbed a hold of the fire extinguishers and activating the fluid on walls and floors. The man spent the entire night inside the Gurdwara causing destructions. During amritvela, a granthi and another volunteer arrived and found the man inside. They immediately detained him until the police arrived on the scene.
After the naked man was detained, the suspect was read to attack with the ceremonial sword in his hand. The damage is being totalled at $35,000 and the priceless damage occurred when the man tore parts of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
The man was charged with 1st degree burglary, Malicious Harassment, and Malicious Mischief.
The Gurdwara released this statement:
“We don’t know the motivations behind the vandalism yet, but we do know that police are treating the case seriously and that the perpetrator has been arrested. There are no immediate indications that bias was involved.
No house of worship in America should ever be vandalized. The Sikh articles of faith, which include the turban and beard, show our commitment to equality, justice and freedom for all. These are not just Sikh values, they are American values.
We would love take this opportunity to invite local Spokane community members to come to an open house at our gurdwara. We are your classmates, colleagues, neighbors and we would love to turn this negative act of vandalism into a positive opportunity for the community to learn more about each other. That approach to life is embedded in the Sikh ethos.”
