NEW DELHI: Security agencies in Delhi were thrown into a tizzy on Wednesday night when a constable posted outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence “accidentally” fired three shots from his AK-47 assault rifle. Officials said the policeman, on duty at the police control room outside 7 RCR, accidentally pressed the trigger while checking his weapon.
Several rounds of gunfire were heard this evening near 7 Race Course Road, the official residence of the Prime Minister in New Delhi.
The police said initial probe suggests that the shots were accidentally fired from the service weapon of a police personnel posted at a PCR van near the Prime Minister’s residence. No one has been hurt, the police said.
The three rounds were fired when the change of staff was happening around 8.30 pm, said a police source.
During change of staff, the weapons were also being changed. That was when the gun went off, he said.
A detailed investigation has been ordered into the matter.
