At least ten people were killed and several feared dead after a landslide hit Gurdwara Manikaran Sahib in Kullu district on Tuesday afternoon.

A massive landslide from Gadagi village, located at a higher altitude, came crashing down on the gurdwara, situated between the Beas and Parvati rivers, burying several people alive. At least 15 pilgrims were injured in the incident but many were feared trapped.


“There was a heavy rush of pilgrims at the gurdwara and its surrounding areas when the landslide occurred,” Thakur Chand, the village sarpanch, said.According to sources, the landslide hit the langar hall (community kitchen) and serai (accommodation) of the gurdwara.

The landslide took giant chunk of the Gurdwara Sahib right into the water. Eyewitnesses say they saw several people being taken into the river. Many people are feared trapped in mud the damaged part of the Gurdwara.

The shocking video shows the massive devastation of the Gurdwara Sahib. Several relief teams are headed towards the area to assist in rescue efforts.


The landslide hit Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib in Parvati valley of Kullu district at about 1.45pm on Tuesday, officials said. Death toll may rise as many people are feared trapped in the debris.

Kullu deputy commissioner Rakesh Kanwar said a disaster management team led by Kullu additional deputy magistrate Vinay Singh Thakur has rushed the spot. Bodies and injured are being ferried to Kullu in local taxis.

Vinay Singh Thakur confirmed that seven bodies have been recovered. “We shall first look if people are trapped in the debris. The entire hill behind Gurudwara is fragile and similar but a small landslide was also reported here last year,” he said.

Despite being a sunny day, the landslide did not allow time to people close to Gurudwara run for life. According to local residents, the entire mountain face has a lose strata and is sliding slowly.
