Liverpool, UK: A Sikh pensioner has spoken of the terrifying moment armed men broke into his St Helens home and attacked him and gagged his wife before stealing cash and jewellery.
Three masked men threatened the couple, aged 75 and 70, with a knife after forcing their way in to the house in Albany Avenue, Eccleston Park, this morning.
The balaclava-clad men sped off in a white Audi which was last seen on St Helens Road heading towards Knowsley Safari Park.
Among the items stolen was a £3,000 watch belonging to the 75-year-old man who does not want to be named.
The victim, who was beaten by the robbers, said he and his wife have been left shaken and shocked by the ordeal.
The couple, who have lived at the detached property for 50-years, say they have never been burgled in all the years they have lived there.
The man described how he was upstairs saying his morning prayers at around 8am when the thieves got into the property through an unlocked pantry window and then broke through to the adjoining kitchen.
He states “They came straight upstairs and went into the bedroom where my wife was, grabbed her and gagged her with tape.
“One of the men, who was carrying a knife, then ran towards me and kicked me in the leg as he shouted ‘give me your money’.”
The father of two fell to the floor in the attack as thieves stole the Omega Presige de Ville watch, given to him as a 40th wedding anniversary gift from his family, jewellery and a wallet containing cash.
The armed robbers even tried to steal the victim’s wedding ring from his finger.
He said: “You just don’t expect something so horrific to happen first thing in the morning.
“We set the alarms every evening but I turn them off when I get up – you expect to be safe at least during the day.”
The armed men broke into the property at 8.10am and fled the scene within seven minutes.
A neighbour, who heard the elderly wife’s “muffled cries” as she walked along the street went round to the pensioners’ house – but the thieves had already left the scene.
She said: “It’s disgusting that this has happened to two elderly members of our community.
“It’s getting worse for targeted crime around here.”
The robbers are all described as white, late teens to early 20s, wearing face coverings and blue hooded jackets.
Crime Scene Investigators have carried out forensic examinations at the scene and house-to-house inquiries have been carried out.
Detective Inspector Paul Unsworth, said: “This was a very frightening incident for the victims who were confronted in their own home by three men, one of whom was armed with a knife.
“Fortunately, neither of the victims were hurt, but they are extremely distressed by their ordeal.
“I would like to take this opportunity to reassure the local community that a thorough investigation is underway and we are doing everything possible to identify the offenders and put them before the courts.”
