Bhagwant Singh Statue in Cuba Updates:
PATIALA: A Campaign is on to place a bust of Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh next to Che Guevara in Cuba’s capital Havana backed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The idea was floated by an individual last year to persuade the Cuban government to install the statue alongside the likes of Salvador Allende, Che Guevara, Antonia Maceo and Jose Marti. The Facebook page started to gather support on the issue got over 21,000 ‘likes’ within a week.
Cuba has a history of honouring foreign revolutionaries. Bhagat Singh should get his rightful place in the world history, say supporters of the campaign.
Last week AAP’s Manish Sisodia and Bhagwant Mann met Cuban ambassador to India Abelardo Gusto Josa with an appeal to install the statue in Havana.
“Cuban Ambassador appreciated the role and revolutionary ideology of Bhagat Singh. We even offered to send a statue of Bhagat Singh to Cuba,” said Delhi-based AAP volunteer Alankar Agnihotri who was part of the four-member delegation.
“But as the Cuban authorities have not yet given their nod we have decided to launch a nationwide campaign on the issue. We are soon going to start it from Punjab,” he added.
