Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday promised to rid Punjab of drugs “within three or four months” if his party came to power in the state next year.
Kejriwal, who began his 5-day tour to the state on Thursday, visited Majha region, a hub of drug abuse, and accused the ruling SAD-BJP of patronising the drug mafia. He warned no one will be spared.
“The supply and sale of drugs cannot happen without support from the top. We will ensure the harshest punishment to them,” Kejriwal told reporters at the house of Jagir Singh, a 60-year-old farm labourer who lost one of his sons to drug abuse a few years ago. Jagir’s other son is in jail for possessing drugs.
The land of the courageous fighters is now crying in agony today due to severe drug menace in the state, Kejriwal said while addressing the aggrieved families.
Kejriwal was shocked to visit Patti village, which is badly in the grip of drug epidemic and how little the Alalis in power care about the issue.
As soon as the convoy of Kejriwal reached the village, within minutes several mothers crying amassed Kejriwal to narrate the horrifying tales of their young sons who lost their lives due to drug abuse.
A mother from the village named Harjit kaur whose son got trapped in drug menace and lost his life, while tears in her eyes, narrated how she witnessed slow death of his son. Another mother Ravinder Kaur, whose son as well Husband both died due to drug abuse in the state, was still inconsolable, but seen enthusiastic to narrate her tale to the visiting Delhi CM.
