An Indian Army soldier reportedly opened fire indiscriminately in Punjab on Tuesday and left at least four civilians dead before shooting himself dead.
The armyman, who has been identified as Jagdeep, opened fire in Punjab’s Sangrur area, according to ANI news agency. Several civilians in the area were injured in the incident, and at least four have succumbed to their injuries.
According to some news updates, the army man stood on the roof of his house and opened fire. He then shot himself, Sangrur SP Jaskiranjeet Singh Teja told the news agency.
Punjab is already seething after days of unrest after members of the Sikh community came out on the streets to protest the alleged desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, their holy book.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called an emergency meeting of cabinet ministers on Tuesday, while paramilitary forces were deployed in several parts of the state.
