UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie visited the Sikh community in Afghanistan and met with the Sikh Afghani Refugees in Delhi, India, to help raise the profile of their plight.
Afghanistans once-thriving Sikh community is dwindling fast as many are being forced to make the decision to leave the country of their birth to escape what they say is growing intolerance and discrimination. Once boasting as many as 100,000 members in the 1990s, Afghanistan’s Sikh population, according to community leaders, has fallen to an estimated 2,500 within a few short decades.
The plight of the Afghanistani Sikhs continues as more and more restrictions are being imposed on this minority community in post war Afghanistan.
Just a few days ago SGPC announced that they will build a further 250 homes in Sri Amritsar Sahib and Ludhiana to help house the Sikh refugees.
Miri Piri Foundation welcomes this move and calls upon state governments do more for the remaining Sikhs in Afghanistan.
