Chandigarh: Giani Gurbachan Singh was reported to have been “upset” over the Dera Sirsa support given to the Akali-Dal BJP alliance. Giani Gurbachan Singh will be holding talks with other takht Jathedars over the matter after Karnail Singh Panjoli alerted the Jathedars over the matter.
A hukamnama from 2007 prevents Sikhs from giving any support to the Dera and no event of the Dera has happened in Punjab in the last 9 years.
Karnail Singh Panjoli asked the SGPC for Suo-motto action rather than holding talks and delaying the process. Panjoli reportedly told the SGPC members regarding the assurance of the Akali Dal to hold programs of the Dera in Punjab.
The Dera comprises of about 31 percent of the total population in the state with mostly Dalit followers. The Malwa region comprises mostly the dalit voters with 35 lakh. The Malwa region consists of 67 seats of the total 117 from the state of Punjab.
The Sirsa (Haryana) based, Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh’s followers are known to vote in favor of a particular party en bloc as directed by Dera. In 2014 Haryana Assembly elections, Dera had supported the BJP and helped the party in get majority in the state for the first time.
