A TAXI driver who found $110,000 in cash on the back seat of his cab has received a Melbourne City Council award for his honesty.
Lakhwinder Singh Dhillon discovered the money in bundles of $10,000 after dropping off a group of people at Crown Casino last month.
Mr Singh said the seven men and two women, whom he picked up from Chinatown in his maxi cab, seemed very drunk.
“When I saw all that money, I thought, what is happening, it is something amazing, what should I do,” he said.
Mr Singh started driving to a police station after finding the cash but soon received a call telling him to return the money to the owners at the casino.
He believed they were visitors from China and patrons of the casino’s Mahogany Room.
“They gave me a $500 reward. One of them said: ‘You’re very honest, you’re a very good man, you’ve helped us a lot.'”
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle presented Mr Singh with a Certificate of Commendation at the recent Melbourne Awards.
“He is truly an inspirational Melburnian – it was the act of an honest man of integrity,” Cr Doyle said.
Mr Singh, 47, said the award was a great honour.
