Hindu Groups Launch Massive ‘Ghar Wapsi’ for 70 Lakh Sehajdhari Sikhs

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)and other Hindu organisations have launched a massive campaign to bring 70 Lakh strong Sehajdhari Sikhs into Hinduism in a program they call ‘Punjab Ghar Wapsi.’

The VHP stated they wanted the Sehajdhari Sikhs go “identify with their origins and join Hinduism”.

The campaign is being launched from a village level to “enlighten” the Sehajdhari Sikhs by handing out pamphlets and telling them that Hinduism was “always open” for them. A group called Hindu Nyay Peeth is reported being active in distribution of pamphlets in villages of Ludhiana and Bathinda.

The Indian Express reported:

“The interactions have started in rural Punjab and soon seminars will be held at the grassroot-level to tell Sehajdhari Sikhs that they are not different from Hindus. We have no problem with Sehajdharis remaining in Sikhism, if they get respect and rights but if not, they should turn towards their origin. There is no need to get forcefully converted to Christianity or Islam,” said Sukhpal Singh, national executive member, VHP.

The effort by the Hindu group comes after the SGPC welcomed the Rajya Sabha legislation barring Sehajdharis from voting in the SGPC elections.
