Former Punjab chief minister late Beant’s grandson died in Chandigarh on Sunday after sustaining bullet injury in mysterious circumstances at his residence.
Harkirat was reportedly suffering from depression, which points towards the possibility of a suicide attempt.
Harkirat was the sarpanch of Kotli village in Punjab’s Ludhiana. His brother, Gurkirat Singh Kotli, is an MLA from Khanna.
“We are conducting investigations. Harkirat comes from a political family and his elder brother Gurkirat is a Congress MLA,” the SHO said, adding “the circumstances around his death remain unclear so far”.
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday expressed grief and sorrow over the untimely demise of Harkirat. Badal prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength and courage to the family to bear the loss.
Meanwhile, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and revenue and public relations minister Bikram Singh Majithia also deeply mourned the passing away of Harkirat.
