Three Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) members, including two from the ruling SAD, announced their resignations on Thursday in protest of the police firing on Sikh activists that left two people dead.
Of the three, the biggest surprise was the resignation of Gurpal Singh Gora, the SGPC member from Gidderbaha constituency, who is considered a close aide of the Badals.
Gora accused the government of failing to stop the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib.
The other Shiromai Akali Dal (SAD) candidate to resign is Avtar Singh Valtoha, the SGPC member from Tarn Tarn.
He accused his party of exploiting the Akal Takht authority to pardon Ram Rahim.
He also blamed the Punjab government for the deaths of two Sikh men killed on Wednesday in police firing.
“I have to listen to the voice of my conscience. It did not allow me to continue in the SGPC, which has completely failed to protect the dignity of Sikhs,” said Avtar Singh, considered close to SAD member of Parliament from Valtoha, Virsa Singh Valtoha.
