An eight-year-old boy was killed in celebratory firing by Samajwadi Party workers in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli city on Sunday, after results of local elections were announced. The party workers reportedly opened fire to celebrate the win of candidate Nafisa when the incident occurred, ANI reported. A local police officer said the child was in an autorickshaw that was passing by when he was hit by a bullet. NDTV reported that the eight-year-old was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to his injury on arrival.
The boy’s relatives blocked the Panipat-Khatima highway after his death. Police tried to reason with them and assured them of strict action against the culprits, but to no avail. Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan said, “Those who were firing indiscriminately in the victory procession will be identified, and strict action will be taken against them.” As the situation continued to be tense, a large police force has been deployed in the Kairana area of Shamli, The Times of India reported.
